Verbier: a long-termer's tips on where to ski, eat + drink
Long-time Verbier aficionado Melissa Brownlow, who set up Mountain Beds in 1992 having worked in the resort since 1987, gives us her insider tips.
Verbier has changed almost beyond recognition since I first arrived in the mid-1980s. In most ways, it’s for the better; the lifts in particular have greatly improved, and the long queues that used to be a regular feature have long since gone. The bars, nightclubs and party atmosphere are second to none.
On the Slopes: off piste is legendary and in 30 years I have still not covered it – a guide is essential BUT there are some itinerary routes, always check they are open before venturing there without a guide. My favourite mountain restaurants are: Chez Simon (back of Savoleyres) and Cabane Mont Fort (pictured above), with its fantastic views.
Off the Slopes: après Ski in the Fer à cheval or live music in the Farinet, cocktails in the Croq No Name and dance the night away in the Farm Club, L’Etoile or Casbah.
